Our Dilemma

What should we do as genuine hammock specialists selling quality, hand made products, when every one who fancies selling on the internet, but knows nothing about hammocks, copies our website and applies it to mass-produced goods of often dubious quality, bought from a wholesaler? How can we convey the quality of our products, plus the integrity of our business?

Does our text sound familiar? It’s copied onto other sites as fast as we write it! Flattering in a way but very frustrating too.

To put this in perspective, we have been importing and selling hand made hammocks for ten years now. For the past 6 years we have worked to build a range of products that are solely fair trade and this is our only source of income. We are not involved in any other business activity. We design our own hammocks and seek out workers co- operatives and small fair trading producer groups to manufacture them for us. With a choice of several ranges, and over 40 different hammocks, we genuinely are hammock specialists, selling only high quality hammocks.

In the last few years with the growth of the internet and on line selling, many people have started looking for niche products to sell on dedicated websites. Most of these people know more about the mechanics of internet selling than they do about the products they sell. These are obtained from wholesalers, usually along with pictures which can be added to a website. Suddenly everyone is “a leading hammock specialist” selling “high quality” items which are “hand-woven” and “Fair traded”.
The reality is that these are mass produced goods of varying quality, from factories which do nothing for fair trade, sold by people who know little more about hammocks than they are told by the wholesaler who supplies them.
